FBR Extends Income Tax Return Filing Deadline to 31 October 2026
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced another extension for filing Income Tax Returns for Tax Year 2026.
According to Circular No. 04 of 2026-27, issued on 15 October 2026, FBR has further extended the filing date to:
31 October 2026
The extension applies to persons who were originally required to file their income tax returns by 30 September 2026 and whose filing date had already been extended to 15 October 2026. Federal Board of Revenue
This gives eligible taxpayers additional time to complete and submit their returns through FBR IRIS.
Why Did FBR Extend the Deadline?
FBR stated that the further extension was granted after receiving requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations.
The authority exercised its powers under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 to grant the extension. Federal Board of Revenue
This means the new deadline is not simply an informal announcement — it has been issued through an official FBR circular.
Who Does the 31 October Extension Apply To?
The latest extension specifically refers to taxpayers who:
- Were required to file their Tax Year 2026 return by 30 September 2026
- Had already received the earlier extension to 15 October 2026
- Have not yet completed their filing
For many individuals and Associations of Persons (AOPs), this means they now have until 31 October 2026 to submit their return.
However, taxpayers should not assume that every filing category automatically has the same deadline.
For example, taxpayers with a different statutory due date should check the rules applicable to their own category.
Should You Wait Until 31 October?
The extension provides extra time, but it is still better not to wait until the final day.
Last-minute filing can create problems such as:
- IRIS login or system congestion
- Missing bank statements
- Incomplete income information
- Wealth Statement reconciliation differences
- Incorrect asset or liability figures
- Missing withholding tax certificates
- Difficulty obtaining professional assistance at short notice
If your documents are already available, use the additional time to review your return properly rather than delaying unnecessarily.
What Should You Review Before Filing?
Before submitting your Tax Year 2026 return, consider checking:
- Salary or business income
- Freelance or professional income
- Bank statements
- Tax already deducted or paid
- Property and rental income
- Vehicles
- Investments
- Loans and liabilities
- Business records
- Previous year's return
- Wealth Statement
- Wealth reconciliation
- Current ATL and registration information
The exact documents depend on your financial circumstances.
Check Your Wealth Statement Carefully
For individual taxpayers, one of the most common filing problems is an unreconciled Wealth Statement.
Your declared income, expenses, assets and liabilities should be consistent with your overall financial position.
Do not enter random figures simply to remove a reconciliation difference.
If the numbers do not reconcile, review the underlying records before submitting your return.
Business Owners Should Review Bank Transactions
Business owners should also make sure that their bank activity can be properly explained.
Bank credits may include:
- Customer receipts
- Transfers between your own accounts
- Capital introduced
- Loans
- Refunds
- Other legitimate transactions
Good bookkeeping helps distinguish actual business income from other inflows.
What If You Already Filed Your Return?
If your Tax Year 2026 return has already been successfully filed, the new extension does not mean you need to file it again.
You should instead:
- Confirm that the return is successfully submitted
- Keep a copy of the filed return
- Keep supporting documents
- Check your tax profile and ATL status where relevant
If you later discover a genuine error, obtain professional advice on the correct procedure rather than simply submitting another return without review.
What If You Still Have Not Started?
If you have not started preparing your return, now is the time to organize your records.
Start with:
- Bank statements
- Income records
- Tax deduction certificates
- Business or freelance records
- Property and vehicle details
- Investments
- Loans and liabilities
- Previous tax return and Wealth Statement
Once the records are organized, preparing an accurate return becomes much easier.
