If you file income tax returns in Pakistan, you may frequently hear the terms “filer,” “active taxpayer,” and “ATL.”
ATL stands for Active Taxpayer List. It is maintained by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and helps identify taxpayers whose status appears as active for income tax purposes.
Checking your ATL status is useful because active taxpayers may qualify for lower withholding tax rates on several common financial transactions.
What Is the Active Taxpayer List?
The Active Taxpayer List is an official FBR record used to identify active income tax return filers.
Your ATL status can affect the amount of withholding tax deducted on certain transactions, which makes maintaining an active tax profile important for individuals, business owners and investors.
FBR provides several ways to verify your current status.
How to Check ATL Status Online
You can check your status through FBR's online verification facilities.
The official IRIS/FBR verification system allows taxpayers to search their Active Taxpayer status using information such as their:
- CNIC
- NTN
- Passport number
- Registration or incorporation number
Make sure you use the official FBR website when checking sensitive tax information.
How to Check ATL Status by SMS
FBR also provides an SMS method.
For an individual, type:
ATL [space] 13-digit CNIC
and send it to:
9966
For an AOP or company, type:
ATL [space] 7-digit NTN
and send it to:
9966
This provides another convenient way of checking your active taxpayer status.
Why Being on the ATL Matters
Being an active taxpayer can provide important financial benefits.
According to FBR, ATL taxpayers may benefit from lower rates of tax deduction or withholding tax in areas including:
- Bank profits and certain cash withdrawals
- Motor vehicle registration and transfer
- Purchase and sale of property
- Capital gains on securities
- Dividend income
- Prize bond winnings
Active taxpayers may also claim back eligible excess tax that has already been withheld.
Is Filing a Tax Return Enough?
Filing an income tax return is an important part of maintaining your tax profile, but taxpayers should also make sure that:
- The correct tax year has been filed
- The return has been successfully submitted
- Required information is complete
- Their ATL status is checked after filing
FBR states that a taxpayer can be included in the ATL even when a return is filed after the specified due date, subject to the applicable rules.
The 30 September Deadline Is Approaching
For individuals and Associations of Persons (AOPs), FBR lists the general income tax return due date as on or before 30 September. Companies generally have a 31 December due date, while companies with a special tax year have a 30 September due date.
If you have not prepared your 2026 income tax return yet, waiting until the final days can make the process unnecessarily stressful.
Preparing early gives you more time to review income, assets, bank information and other relevant records before submission.
