Why Your Wealth Statement Won’t Submit in FBR IRIS: Reconciliation Explained for 2026
While preparing an income tax return in Pakistan, one of the most common areas of confusion is the Wealth Statement and Wealth Reconciliation.
You may complete your income details correctly but still find that your Wealth Statement does not submit successfully in FBR IRIS.
This often happens because the figures entered for your income, expenses, assets and liabilities do not reconcile.
What Is a Wealth Statement?
A Wealth Statement provides information about a taxpayer’s financial position, including assets and liabilities.
Depending on your circumstances, this may include information relating to:
-
Cash and bank balances
-
Property
-
Vehicles
-
Investments
-
Business capital
-
Personal assets
-
Loans and liabilities
-
Other relevant assets
FBR states that completing an online Income Tax Return involves completing both the Return of Income and the Wealth Statement.
What Does Wealth Reconciliation Mean?
In simple terms, your financial movement during the year needs to make sense.
FBR explains that the change in your current year's wealth compared with the previous year's wealth should correspond with the difference between your income and expenses. If the Wealth Statement does not reconcile, IRIS will not allow successful submission.
A simplified way to understand it is:
Previous Wealth + Income − Expenses = Current Wealth
Other legitimate inflows or outflows may also need to be considered depending on your situation.
Why Does a Wealth Statement Fail to Reconcile?
There can be several reasons.
1. Missing Bank Balance
A taxpayer may declare salary or business income but forget to correctly include year-end bank balances.
2. New Property or Vehicle
If you purchased property, a vehicle or another significant asset during the year, the acquisition must properly connect with your available funds.
3. Incorrect Personal Expenses
Household and personal expenses can affect reconciliation.
If expenses are entered incorrectly, the difference between income and wealth may not match.
4. Loans or Liabilities Are Missing
Money received as a genuine loan can affect your financial position.
If a relevant liability is omitted, reconciliation may show an unexplained difference.
5. Previous Year's Figures Are Incorrect
Your opening wealth generally connects with information from the previous tax year.
If previous figures are inconsistent, the current Wealth Statement may become difficult to reconcile.
6. Assets Are Entered at Incorrect Figures
Errors in asset values can also create unexplained differences.
Review your entries carefully before attempting to force the reconciliation to zero.
Do Not Enter Random Figures Just to Make It Reconcile
A common mistake is adjusting expenses, cash or other figures simply to remove the reconciliation difference.
This can create inaccurate tax records.
Your Wealth Statement should reflect your actual financial circumstances and supporting information.
If there is a difference that you cannot explain, it is better to identify its source before submitting the return.
What Should You Review Before Filing?
Before final submission, consider reviewing:
-
Previous year's Wealth Statement
-
Current bank balances
-
Salary or business income
-
Property purchased or sold
-
Vehicles
-
Investments
-
Loans and liabilities
-
Personal and household expenses
-
Gifts or other legitimate financial movements where applicable
-
Taxes paid or deducted
-
Any major financial transaction during the year
Your requirements will depend on your individual circumstances.
How Do You Know Your Return Has Been Submitted?
According to FBR guidance, successful submission is confirmed when the relevant Income Tax Return and Wealth Statement forms move from the Draft folder to Completed Task in IRIS.
Simply entering information into IRIS does not necessarily mean the filing has been completed.
Always confirm the final submission status.
Do Not Leave Reconciliation Until the Last Day
For individuals and Associations of Persons (AOPs), FBR lists the general income tax return due date as on or before 30 September.
If your Wealth Statement contains a difference, resolving it may require checking previous returns, bank records, assets and other information.
Starting early gives you more time to identify and correct genuine discrepancies.
